Spam, Phishing, and Malware Emails

Spam is unsolicited email that is typically sent out to a large number of recipients. It is also called Junk Mail. Phishing is an email that is looking for personal/confidential information and looks legitimate but is not. The email will typically contain a link to a web page that will ask for personal information like usernames and/or passwords. Remember that CCSU will never ask for personal information or passwords via email. Emails can also contain malware (unwanted, harmful programs). If you don't know the source of an email and it contains links or attachments that are unknown to you - do not click the link or open the attachment. Follow the instructions under "Additional Information" below, to report these emails. CCSU has an anti-spam solution in place that attempts to detect these types of email and prevent them from going into your email Inbox. Email that looks like spam or phishing, will go to your Junk Email folder within Outlook. You should look through this list to make sure a legitimate message did not accidently go into the Junk Email folder.

How to Access:

The Junk Email folder is located in the folder list on the left side of the Outlook client or Outlook web mail. We recommend that you review your Junk Email folder on a regular basis. You may move legitimate messages back to your Inbox by clicking on the Junk button in the message and selecting Not Junk.

Some spam/phishing emails are still being flagged at the server level and reported to you via an email from quarantine@messaging.microsoft.com. There are options within the email to move legitimate emails to your Inbox and report as not junk. You may review the emails flagged at the server level at anytime by logging in to https://spam.ccsu.edu with your Office 365 account.
